About Us

We are a joyful community of women dedicated to prayer in the service of God's people, in the tradition of St Teresa of Avila.  We belong to the Order of Discalced Carmelites and we live at Thicket Priory, near York, in the Parish of St George's and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Middlesbrough.

We are enclosed, which means that we do not leave the monastery grounds except for very necessary reasons. Enclosure enables us to foster an atmosphere of silence and prayer, from which everyone can benefit.

We play an important role in the life of the local community, building strong ecumenical friendships with the different Christian churches. We welcome people of all faiths and of none who wish to find some peace and quiet at Thicket. All are welcome to attend Mass at the monastery which is celebrated at 9.30a.m. every Sunday. The time varies on other days so if you wish to attend please phone us to confirm the time.

Prayer is the communication of the soul with God. God is love,
and love is goodness giving itself away. It is a fullness of being that does not
want to remain enclosed in itself, but rather to share itself with others.
